ECCA’s Newsletter: September 21, 2024

Greetings Neighbor!

It has been a while since the last newsletter and I hope this finds you and your family well. As stated in previous emails and updates, the amount of newsletter’s that you’ll receive will decrease going forward.

With that being said, ECCA met with Queensborough President Donovan Richards, along with other civics on the Peninsula on Tuesday, September 10th. We discussed the grievances some of you have shared and what we live with on a daily basis. We discussed the poor infrastructure, flooding, unkempt empty lots, lack of maintenance with the catch basins, mosquitoes, and the safety of our children crossing the streets during rush hour times.

In attendance were local departments such as DEP, NYC Parks, Dep’t of Transportation, Dep’t of Sanitation, and NYPD. QBP Richards also held another meeting, a Town Hall, on Monday, September 16th at the Arverne by the Sea YMCA where there were additional city agencies like NYCHA, Human Resources Admin, Dep’t of Education and Dep’t of Buidlings. Those who attended got a chance to write down questions and have them answered with an ETA of resolution for their complaint. Residents also got the chance to meet with the city agencies after the meeting. The ECCA website has been updated with the city agencies and their contact info.

The one true takeaway from the meetings was to always put in a ticket with 311 and if it’s not resolved or the ticket is closed prior to the resolution, to notify Community Board 14, along with local elected officials to make them aware of the situation. If you can’t dial 311 from your phone, call (212) 639-9675 or download the 311 app (Apple phones) (Google phones).

The National Weather Service has issued the following:

What: Coastal Flood Warning

Where: Queens South

When: 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on 9/21

Hazards: Inundation of one-half feet above ground level is expected to cause beach erosion and widespread moderate flooding of vulnerable shore roads and/or properties.

Preparedness Actions:

- Avoid driving through or coming in contact with flood waters. Six inches of fast flowing water can knock you off your feet, and as little as one foot of rushing water can carry away a car. There could be pollutants in the water or other hazards that you cannot see.

- Coastal flood waters could damage your vehicle. Move your car to higher ground, and wash your car thoroughly if it makes contact with flood waters.

- New York City residents, please call 311 if you encounter flooding that makes roads impassable, causes property damage, or persists for more than 48 hours.
