EDGEMERE COMMUNITY CIVIC ASSOCIATION'S WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
January 27, 2024
Greetings Neighbor!
As we end the first month of the new year, there has been new findings that’s going on in our beloved city and unfortunately some old findings seemed to trickle their way into the new year. The City of Yes plan leaves many with a lot of questions that probably won’t get answered. Keep in mind that this plan consists of three categories: housing opportunity, economic opportunity and carbon neutrality. In addition to reading the plan, the community must know that Community Board 14 has just as many questions and the main focus is housing opportunity. This plan is loaded with zoning changes and revisions that’ll leave communities in disarray, but please read it for yourself and attend the community board meetings to make your voices heard or just to be more informed.
ECCA Civic Update
Our next civic meeting for the month of February has been postponed to March 4th at 7pm at the Arverne East Welcome Center.
IN THE NEWS
Community Flood Watch Update
A moderate nor’easter is expected to arrive Sunday night/Monday morning, bringing the possibility of minor flooding for City Island/The Bronx and inside Jamaica Bay during high tides Sunday and Monday. This period of possible minor high tide flooding will not resemble the recent flood event on January 13, which reached the “major” flood level threshold inside Jamaica Bay. However, there could be multiple days with minor flooding during high tide. For context, “minor” flooding is considered nuisance flooding; avoid parking on low lying streets during this period if you can.
Small possibility of minor flooding during high tides on Sunday and Monday reaching 7.5 ft. MLLW. Keep checking the forecast tonight and tomorrow.
Sunday morning @ 10:32AM
Sunday evening @ 11:11PM
Monday morning @ 11:09AM
Monday evening @ 11:50PM
Local context:
For reference, tide levels are expected to be similar to January 16, 2024, when the tide reached approximately 9.5 feet MLLW at Kings Point, resulting in 9.5 inches of flooding at Ditmars St/Hunter Ave on City Island. The same date, the tide reached 7.5 feet MLLW at Jamaica Bay at Inwood, resulting in 6.6 inches of flooding at Beach 84th St in the Rockaways.
Check the Stevens Flood Advisory System website for details, make sure you’re subscribed for alerts from NotifyNYC to receive official warnings and forecasts, and keep an eye on the coastal flood forecast throughout the weekend.
