Greetings Neighbor!

As we continue to celebrate Women’s History Month, did you know that in the 1970’s, groups began to highlight the historical contributions of women as part of public events? 1978 marked the first “Women’s History Week,” which coincided with International Women’s Day, March 8th. In 1987, Congress voted to make March Women’s History Month (New York City had recognized the month of March as Women’s History Month since 1981). Source: NYC Parks

There are still ways to celebrate Women’s History Month:

  1. NYC Life: Celebrate Women's History every Monday and Tuesday night in March.

  2. Don Antonio: Visit the female-owned pizzeria in Midtown Manhattan.

  3. Staten Island Museum: Learn about the nurses of Sea View Hospital in the exhibition "Taking Care: The Black Angels of Sea View Hospital".

  4. MCNY: Participate in virtual student workshops led by museum educators.

  5. NYPL: Join the Center for Educators and Schools and the Hasta 'Bajo Project for a conversation about the role of women in shaping reggaeton.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch in effect citywide from 8 AM today Saturday, 3/23, to 2 AM Sunday 3/24. Additionally, the full moon early next week may bring minor coastal flooding, which will be most likely during high tide on Monday evening, 3/25, and Tuesday, 3/26.

Periods of moderate to heavy rain will continue through the evening and taper off tonight. The period of heaviest rainfall is expected between about 2 PM and 8 PM. Rainfall totals of 2.5 to 3.5 inches are forecast citywide, with locally higher amounts of 4 inches possible. Rainfall rates of 0.25 to 0.5 inch/hour are expected, with peak rates approaching 1 inch/hour. Widespread minor flooding will be possible during periods of heavy rain, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Traffic delays, minor flooding of properties and buildings, and a few localized road closures will be possible. Significant flash flooding is not expected, but localized flash flooding cannot be ruled out if the heaviest rainfall sets up directly over the city. Fortunately, the bulk of Saturday’s rain is expected between high tides, so compound flooding is not expected.

Information about High Tide Flooding on Monday/Tuesday

Looking ahead, a full moon on Monday, 3/25, will likely produce several rounds of minor coastal flooding early next week, particularly for Jamaica Bay. The tides of greatest concern are Monday night, Tuesday morning, and again Tuesday night.

Water levels of 7.5-8.0 feet MLLW are possible during high tide Monday evening and Tuesday. SFAS currently predicts a tide closer to 7.0 feet MLLW, but check the forecast over the weekend. For reference, on March 9, 2024, a high tide of 7.6 feet MLLW caused 6.2 inches of flooding on Russell Street in Hamilton Beach.
