FYI
Just in case you’ve heard the loud noises coming from the empty lot on Beach 44th St. and Rockaway Beach Blvd., just know that this lot belongs to the MTA and they are currently doing construction (see below). At times the noise can be overbearing during the day. We were told that the MTA are monitoring the noise and vibration of the drilling. If you experience any issues during this construction, please let us know by sending us an email.
Flood Mitigation Work at 26 Substations in Brooklyn, Manhattan & Queens March 2024 Update Focus on Rockaway Substations
Project Goals
The MTA is continuing to improve the resiliency of the subway system by performing flood mitigation work at 26 MTA Substations vulnerable to flooding, throughout Brooklyn, Queens, & Manhattan.
Substations are critical to safe and reliable service by providing necessary power to operate the system.
This work will protect the power supply so that the subway can remain functional during severe weather-related events including flash flooding, storm surge, and sea level rise.
Broad Channel, Edgemere and Rockaway Park Substations
These 3 Queens substations are part of the second group (Package 2) to get started, and includes substations located within coastal communities that are most prone and vulnerable to flooding.
Work at these substations require more elaborate flood devices and deeper foundations that will include pile driving.
Work includes installing drainage and structural finishes within MTA property and flood walls.
In some cases, rain tanks and flood gates will be constructed.
Digital sensors will be installed on every work site, monitoring vibration and noise.
All work will be performed on MTA property between the hours of 7:00am -5:00pm.
While this work is concentrated within the existing MTA footprint, there will be instances where sidewalks and parking will need to be modified to allow for construction equipment access and egress. These may be in place for the duration of the construction at any specific site.
