ECCA’s Weekly Newsletter: June 15, 2024

Greetings Neighbor!

Happy Saturday! Father’s Day is Sunday, June 16th and ECCA is wishing all the Dad’s and Dad-like figures a Happy Father’s day! Here are a few things to do in NYC for that special guy in your life. 👨

On another note, there has been complaints of squatters living in Zombie homes. Zombie homes are dilapidated houses or buildings and is deemed to be unsafe for any living situation. These homes/buildings are dangerous due to many reasons. The scariest part is if something goes wrong inside these Zombie homes/buildings, it can cause damage to the neighboring homes. This is a very unfortunate situation but must be reported via 311 ticketing system. If you notice a Zombie home or squatters in the neighborhood living in a Zombie home, please enter a ticket with 311 and notify the civic as we are spearheading this situation to make sure HPD takes responsibility for these Zombie homes.

Thirdly, ECCA is still in the fight for beach access. As you know, the bird nesting area/sanctuary takes up the entire Edgemere neighborhood, from Beach 35th-Beach 50th. Below is a list of beach (actually having access to the ocean) closures and openings as per NYC Parks. As you look at the list, it’s not only confusing but it brings about the illusion that the beach is open to us, but it’s not. It is important as tax paying citizens that we demand access to the beach as do everyone else who live in the Rockaway’s. ECCA has been communicating with local elected officials along with U.S. Fish and Wildlife and NYC Parks and we will continue until we get what we deserve. Please sign and share this petition. The more signatures, the more traction it’ll get from the local elected officials, city and state agencies, and the entire world.

Collection for all Wednesday Material Begins Thursday

The New York City Department of Sanitation announced that there would be no trash, curbside compost or recycling collection on Juneteenth, Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

  • Residents who normally receive Wednesday trash, curbside compost or recycling collection should place their material at the curb Wednesday evening for collection beginning Thursday, June 20.

Please note that residents may experience collection delays, as is common after holidays. We appreciate patience as we work to collect the backlog of material.

For questions about Sanitation services and holiday schedules contact 311 or visit nyc.gov/sanitation.

HEALTH

June is also Men’s Health Month. Get your guy going by doing things together, i.e., walking, gym activities, swimming, and the like. Also it’s the perfect time to mention screenings like Prostate Screenings (starts at 50yrs old but younger if family history of Prostate Cancer) and Colonoscopy (starts at 50yrs old but younger if you have previous stomach and/or bowel issues. Prostate Cancer and Colorectal Cancer, in it’s early stages, is highly curable as long as your guy stays on top of his screenings and overall health.
