We are in the homestretch on groin construction. 17 of 19 are complete, and the last two are underway. The groin at Beach 44 is expected to be done in a month or so, and the final groin, at Beach 52, is on track to be done by spring!
Dune construction is underway in the middle of the beach. This fall, work has progressed from Beach 82 to Beach 106. The dune structure and grading should be done an all access points reopened between Beach 82-Beach 92 around New Year’s, and access through the 90s by mid-January. Excavation began pushing eastward from Beach 67 this week; dune construction will progress eastward toward the Beach 50s through the winter, until mid-March.
Dune planting is expected to begin in early January, moving westward from Beach 126 toward Beach 149. In order to optimize plant viability, the work will happen in several phases, with shrubs and perennials planted now, dune grass planted in the late winter/early spring, and wood picket dune fence and wood posts installed in the spring as the planting is complete.
Permanent crossover ramps will be installed over the dune in Far Rockaway prior to beach season. Excavation and pile placement will begin in January.
