EDGEMERE COMMUNITY CIVIC ASSOCIATION'S WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
April 27, 2024
Greetings Neighbor!
April has been a very busy month for a lot of us. As members of the Jamaica Bay Community Flood Watch, ECCA attended the Jamaica Bay Community Flood event on April 20th. Folks who are impacting by flooding, or who just wanted to learn about flooding attended the event where stories were shared and suggestions for flood preparedness were mentioned. The purpose for these events are for people to share their stories and give rise to how flooding impacts some people and neighborhoods more than others and to also make politicians aware of just how much we are affected when it comes to climate change, in hopes of either mitigating the occurrences or find a solution.
Should you have any pictures or video on how flooding affected you, please email them to us and we will honor your anonymity, if requested.

SERVICE ADVISORY FOR NEW YORKERS: Effective Monday, April 22nd, Largest NYC Sanitation Shift to Begin One Hour Earlier
As part of the Adams administration's efforts to get the streets cleaner, faster, trash collection will begin no later than 5am Citywide; residents are reminded to place waste out for collection by midnight ahead of their collection day
New York – As part of the ongoing efforts to ensure that 24 million pounds of residential waste spend as little time in our public spaces as possible, the largest New York City Department of Sanitation shift will move an hour earlier effective Monday, April 22nd. This shift has traditionally run from 6am to 2pm, and will instead run 5am to 1pm.
Prior to the pandemic, approximately 80% of trash was collected beginning at 6am, 14 hours after it had been allowed to be set out, with the remaining 20% not beginning to be collected until 4pm - in other words, a full 24 hours after it was placed directly on the curb. This trash had sat for a full day taking up public space, attracting rats, and emitting odors. Under Mayor Adams' leadership, New York's Strongest have reoriented towards substantially reducing the time this trash occupies public space.
Today, residential waste may go out no earlier than 6pm in a bin or 8pm if placing bags on the curb. Substantial amounts are now collected at midnight, mere hours after the trash is set out, and the old 4pm trash shift has been completely eliminated.
Today's announcement represents a substantial operational change that will make for cleaner streets across the City, with trash removed from many areas before most residents are awake and using the streets and sidewalks.
All residential property owners and managers are reminded to place their waste out for collection by midnight ahead of their collection day - DSNY will be there to pick it up faster than ever before.
