Our Highlight of 2023
ECCA brought insight to those in the community and on the Rockaway Peninsula that the Edgemere residents hasn’t had access to the beach for many years due to the endangered birds. This year, we held NYC Parks accountable when they made everyone outside of this community think that we can access the beach. The Edgemere community was told the beach was open BEFORE and AFTER the nesting period and that never was, not for years. This year, with the support of Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Selvena Brooks-Powers, Assemblymember Khaleel Anderson, Assemblymember Stacey Phefer-Amato, Senator James Sanders, Jr., and Congressman Gregory Meeks, NYC Parks opened the beach at multiple access points in the Edgemere community and placed mobi mats at certain points to make it easier for those who have physical disabilities. Upon opening the beach, the amount of trash, high grass, weeds, and unidentifiable vegetation in the sand was enormous and a huge eye sore. Mentioning this to our local elected officials, NYC Parks moved into action to clean the beach and make it more pleasurable for beachgoers to attend. Our fight isn’t over! Going forward, the goal is to have full access to the beach year round, giving equity and equality to those within the Edgemere community. How? By implementing a pathway to allow the Edgemere community and others to enjoy the beach, just as it’s set up on the west end of the Peninsula. Our petition is still going as we still need your support Birds Over People.
